20ft Radio and Neformat media became part of the project ‘Альтернативи: New Voices From Ukraine’ by British media The Quietus. Its goal is to explore the underground scene and independent artists in Ukraine
About the project by 20ft Radio
As part of ‘Альтернативи: New Voices From Ukraine’, 20ft Radio will create six episodes of the podcast ‘Memory Leaks: The Story of Ukrainian Indie, Underground and Beyond’.
Co-author and host of the podcast is Olena Pohonchenkova, author of bubblegum zine, a print zine and the eponymous Telegram channel about the independent scene.
Memory Leaks will focus on the history of Ukrainian independent music, using the memories of the participants of the events as a primary source of knowledge.
‘We will trace how the bedroom avant-garde of the early ‘90s transformed into the electronic cross-genre experiments of today’, the project description reads.
In the first episode, which will be released in June, the authors will explore the early days of independent music, focusing on ‘Sugar White Death’, Oleksandr Yurchenko and the avant-garde scene in Kyiv in the 1980s.
About the Neformat project
Neformat will prepare a two-part feature that will focus on the organizations and individuals whose work forms the modern Ukrainian underground scene.
Special attention is paid to women who create in wartime conditions, as well as to new Ukrainian metal.
‘Strange times to build a culture, but what do we fight for otherwise?’, Yaryna Denysiuk, editor-in-chief of Neformat, says.
The release date of the project by Neformat is unknown.
In February 2024, 20ft Radio announced a collaboration with French media Le Type. As part of it, artists from Bordeaux, France (where Le Type is based) and Kyiv record mixes which they present on both platforms.
In this way, the teams want to build connections between the music scenes of the two cities and introduce their audiences to new artists. Read more about the collaboration between Le Type and 20ft in our article.
