MYPH launches the bilingual magazine ‘525’

The conceptual and art photography school MYPH will publish a bilingual print magazine titled ‘525’. The publication will focus on contemporary Ukrainian photography and its place within the context of global visual culture. ‘525’ will provide a platform for young photographers, introduce audiences to ‘landmark texts on photography’, and open up space for discussions about visual culture and contemporary consumption of images

‘Our focus is photography — a medium that today has become highly accessible and, at the same time, has almost lost its physicality due to digitalization. Yet it remains a key tool for perceiving, analyzing, and interpreting the world, as well as a central element of contemporary visual culture’, the editorial team of the first issue, which includes Olha Lobazova, Oksana Maister, Veronika Mol, and Robert Dovhanych, says.

About the first issue of ‘525’

The first issue, which will span 140 pages, is titled ‘Glass and Steel’ and will be an attempt to reflect on and document the Ukrainian experience of living through war.

The issue will introduce several recurring sections of ‘525’. For example, the ‘Fragment’ section will offer translations of key texts relevant to contemporary visual culture. The first issue will feature an excerpt from the essay ‘The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility’ (1936) by German philosopher and critic Walter Benjamin, translated by Roksolana Sviato and academically edited by Olena Chervonyk.

The ‘Focus’ section will present works and projects selected through an open call; ‘Touch’ will offer research into the history of Ukrainian photography; and ‘Conversation’ will serve as a platform for interviews and discussions on current topics. In the ‘Perspective’ section, experts will share their responses to questions about photography today.

The first issue of ‘525’ will also include a section created in collaboration with the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers (UAPP). It will feature a conversation with Vladyslav Krasnoshchok and Serhii Korovainyi, photographers currently working on the front line, about photography during wartime and, specifically, Susan Sontag’s essay ‘Regarding the Pain of Others’.

The editorial team plans to keep an open call for new projects on an ongoing basis.

The first issue of ‘525’ will be released in print in November and is already available for pre-order.
