Fuji Moodji, the funk duo from Dnipro, worked on ‘Morpheus’ for about a year. According to the musicians, the 12-track longplay describes their dreams and memories
The story of ‘Morpheus’ began with the tracks ‘Cumcvat Dive Pound’ and ‘Ulamok’, which were initially intended to be part of the EP ‘Clark’. However, with eight tracks already created, the band decided to expand the project into a full album and began shaping its narrative.
‘This is a myth created from reality. A journey that begins with a big question: ‘Is it worth it?’ The album is about the journey — the feeling when you’ve already been through something important and difficult, and with surprise realize it was only the first step. Ahead, there are no guarantees, no compromises. Nothing but the journey itself’, Hlib Petrenko, a member of the duo, describes the release.
About the tracks from ‘Morpheus’
The release focuses primarily on the lyrics and the ‘accessibility’ of the songs, while the sound of ‘Morpheus’ is minimalist, without electric guitars, emphasizing drums and bass.
‘‘Cumcvat Dive Pound’ is built from fast drum loops from the track ‘Kram’. We then added everything else on top of that structure. ‘Destroyed Time’ was created similarly, based on a drum structure that I played in one take.
‘Escape from the Kram’ is an interesting exploration of a moment; the instrumental was created using drum loops from the track ‘Warp Things’, as well as bass guitar’, duo member Oleh Mykhalin describes some of the tracks.
‘Ulamok’ is thematically divided into two parts — a more tense one and a calmer one.
In the first part, Fuji Moodji tells through the lyrics about ‘those small details of civilian life we experience against the backdrop of war’: long-distance relationships, constant relocations, and ‘other trials for the psyche’. In the second part, there are no words, so here the musicians ‘seem to find peace by accepting the situation to a measured wind instrument motif’.
