You can now visit the Kyiv gallery The Naked Room at 2A Zolotovoritska Street. The new space is larger than the previous one but remains true to the gallery’s original ‘bare walls’ concept. We spoke with The Naked Room team and share the key features of the new place
The space features two exhibition halls and an additional room that will serve as the team’s office, though it can be converted into a third exhibition space whenever needed.
The bar and entrance area have also been expanded, now complemented by a showroom ‘for the ongoing presentation of artists’.
The space is currently undergoing renovations, which are expected to be completed by the end of April. The team is working on the gallery’s sound and lighting systems, and also aims to make the space more inclusive, in particular by redesigning the entrance area. They are currently looking for partners to support this.
‘Today, there is no fully accessible art space in Kyiv. We aim to change this and set a new standard of accessibility for cultural institutions’, The Naked Room team explains.
What the new space has to offer
According to the team, the new premises will allow them to host larger-scale exhibitions and projects, present artists’ series more comprehensively, and better ‘showcase their artistic practices’.
The organizers are already planning the first solo exhibitions for several young artists whose work has previously been partially featured in their projects.
Exhibitions will remain the core format of The Naked Room, but the team also plans to introduce other activities: pop-ups, performances, music events, and film screenings.
According to the team, the expanded space will enhance the visitor experience and offer a more immersive way of viewing:
‘We’ve already heard feedback from friends of the gallery: ‘I used to come to the gallery to run into someone, but now you can come and see no one at all’’.
The space opened with a four-day exhibition by Denys Ruban and Oleh Baranovskyi. The Naked Room also plans to host ‘short-format events’ during the reconstruction, including music events and pop-ups.
