As part of ‘Ukrainian Field Notes’, British director and music blogger Gianmarco Del Re speaks with Ukrainian electronic musicians and producers. The previous two books in the series were released with the involvement of the Odesa-based label система | system, while the new edition will be published by the British publishing house Velocity Press
‘Ukrainian Field Notes: Sound, Music & Voices From Ukraine After the Full-Scale Invasion’ is based on more than 300 interviews that Gianmarco has conducted since 2022.
It explores the processes of adaptation and transformation the Ukrainian music scene has undergone, including recording music on mobile phones, streaming performances from bomb shelters, festivals held within curfew restrictions, clubs functioning as hubs of volunteer activity, and the diaspora building new global connections.

‘It examines how explosions, air-raid sirens, and other wartime sounds have transformed everyday listening, and how these new acoustic realities are being processed, reinterpreted, or deliberately erased within electronic music and club culture’, the description states.
The book is available for pre-order on the Velocity Press website for £9.99.
About the ‘Ukrainian Field Notes’ project
The project began in 2022 as a series of interviews by Del Re for his music blog ‘A Closer Listen’.
In 2023, the conversations collected over the course of a year were published in book form, accompanied by a charitable music compilation featuring tracks by the project’s participating musicians, curated by Gianmarco.
In 2024, the publication was followed by a sequel featuring interviews from 2023–2024, as well as a new compilation.
