‘Northern Station’ (Stantsiia Pivnichna): electroacoustic music studio to open in Sumy, applications for the first residency are now open

The experimental music hub ‘Northern Station’ will open at the Sumy Regional Philharmonic in July 2026. The studio’s first project will be a week-long residency with three mentors and a concert at the philharmonic

About ‘Northern Station’

The project will host educational programmes and short-term residencies for musicians. Another part of ‘Northern Station’ will be a series of electroacoustic online releases.

According to Oleksandr Chornyi, curator of ‘Youth Music Centre’, ‘Northern Station’ will make it possible to build an active community of electronic musicians in Sumy through creative exchange within its projects:

‘For ‘Youth Music Centre’, it is important to create long-term initiatives that strengthen the infrastructure of the local music scene. It’s challenging, but it will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the city’s musical landscape. ‘Northern Station is exactly that kind of project’.

About the first residency

The residency, taking place from 19 to 26 July, aims to explore the ‘local identity’ of Sumy and Ukraine’s northern regions, as well as the intersection of electronic and classical music.

Five musicians will be selected to take part in the residency. Over the course of a week, they will attend lectures, workshops and rehearsals, while creating a new composition together with Sumy-based electronic musician Oleksii Pogulyay, American sound artist and curator of the noise label Kyivpastrans Clemens Pool, and German composer Sagardia.

According to the organisers, the ‘Northern Station’ residency welcomes both composers experienced in working with ensembles and orchestras and experimental electronic musicians.

The programme will culminate in a concert at the philharmonic, bringing together the Renaissance Chamber Orchestra and the residency participants’ sound experiments. The participants’ tracks will also be released as part of an online release.

The ‘Northern Station’ residency will also feature a public programme, including a sound walk and field recording workshop, a lecture titled ‘Noise as a Cultural Phenomenon in Ukraine and Beyond’, a discussion on quadraphonic sound and spatial listening, as well as a workshop on building piezoelectric microphones and DIY sound devices.

Additional talks and workshops will explore the intersection of electronic and classical music, as well as techniques for working with live instruments.

Participation in the ‘Northern Station’ residency is free and requires participants to remain in Sumy throughout the programme. Applications can be submitted via the link until June 28.
