The photo book ‘Through Her Eyes’ features the work of six Ukrainian female photographers who, following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, either joined the military or became volunteers. The publication aims to show and document the war through the lens of women who ‘do not observe it from the outside, but live through it every day’
In a comment to DTF Magazine, the ‘Through Her Eyes’ team said the idea for the photo book originated from the 2024 exhibition of the same name, which was also presented in New York in spring 2026.
The book became an extension of the exhibition and a tool for engaging in dialogue with American audiences. ‘…Later, the idea emerged to transform it into a photo book — an object that could be passed from hand to hand and gifted to American politicians, journalists, influencers, and partners. The book became a continuation of the exhibition and a way to start a conversation through human stories and documentary evidence of the war, without pushing the viewer away, but rather inviting them into a dialogue’, the team says.
‘Through Her Eyes’ consists of 176 pages and 76 documentary, portrait, and artistic photographs, complemented by captions in Ukrainian and English. The authors include Dariia Sviertilova, Nastia Verbova, Liza Bukreieva, Mariia Taran, Veronika Mushtai, and Kseniia Tomchyk.
For the publisher of the photo book, Olha Sunden, it was important that all the female photographers documented the events in their own way — this makes it possible to form a ‘cohesive narrative of how the war changes people, cities, and the country’.
The team chose to focus specifically on women’s perspectives in both the book and the exhibition in order to offer ‘a different lens’ through which to talk about the war. The team says that the shots from ‘Through Her Eyes’ document not only events, but also details that often go unnoticed — human relationships, care, daily life, and moments of hope and inner strength.
‘The photographers selected images that hold stories and moments of personal significance for each of them. The book includes photographs that help capture the experience of the war and show people’s lives within it — their meetings, work, daily routine, moments of joy and loss. At the same time, the authors seek to preserve images that are taking on new meaning today as the people and places depicted in them continue to change’.
‘Through Her Eyes’ is now available at bookstores across Ukraine, including MEGOGO Books, priced at UAH 2,000.
