The single ‘moi sestry’ by Ukrainian independent artist nusia has been released on the POTOP label. In the track, the artist reimagines the classic tale of mermaids, but in nusia’s version, the protagonist faces ‘a less tragic ending’
According to nusia, ‘moi sestry’ tells a story of betrayal, but instead of remaining a victim, the protagonist gathers other ‘abandoned’ women around her.
In the single, the mermaid acts as a symbol of women’s resilience — those who can ‘turn their pain into strength and turn it back on the one who hurt them’.
‘I’ve been fascinated by the sea and all the stories about mermaids since childhood. However, the traditional fairy tale — where a young woman sacrifices her life for the love of a prince who ultimately betrays her — never resonated with me… This track is meant to highlight the strength of women and the fierce anger we so often feel and, unfortunately, so often suppress’, the musician adds.
Another Ukrainian musician and producer, Molfar Mikii, worked on the track alongside nusia.
About nusia
nusia is the project of Kyiv-based indie musician Niusia Halushka, who until recently worked solely as a vocalist. Today, nusia experiments with writing instrumental parts for her own stories, often using mythological characters as lyrical protagonists.
In 2025, nusia released her debut conceptual EP ‘sadova kolyskova’ (Garden Lullaby), the solo single ‘Find Me’, and also took part in the DTF Magazine Mirage Camp Special.
