Виставка художника з Нової Каховки Максима Кільдерова

An exhibition of artist Maxym Kilderov from Nova Kakhovka will open in Vinnytsia. The event will take place in the shawarma cafe ‘ASABa’

The new exhibition FRAMED//UNFRAMED 2 is a continuation of the solo exhibition that took place in May 2022 and embodied two stages of Maxym’s life: 55 days of occupation in Nova Kakhovka and evacuation to Vinnytsia, and life on the territory of free Ukraine. The new exhibition consists of two parts: the first 15 works can be seen in the shawarma cafe ‘ASABa’, and the others — in the artist’s studio. We tell you more about the idea of the exhibition and why it was decided to open it in a shawarma cafe and not in a gallery

Background of creation

Maxym was planning an exhibition at Art Basel Miami. A gallerist (whose name he did not give — Note from DTF Magazine) bought from him 18 painted grenade launcher containers from the ‘Land Lease’ collection. The gallerist hurried Maxym in order to complete all the paperwork in time for the event on December 8.

‘Unfortunately, the gallerist didn’t have time to show the ‘Land Lease’ container series in Miami this year, — Maxym said on Instagram. — But I’m used to adaptation, so why not create an exhibition in one week and present it in the shawarma cafe ‘ASABa’ next door [to the house]’.

Solo exhibitions of the artist are held once a year: the first one took place in 2020 in Nova Kakhovka Art Gallery, the next one — in the exhibition hall of Kherson National Union of Artists of Ukraine, and in 2022 — in Kyiv gallery ‘Lavra’.

‘I really love traditions, so I decided that if I don’t hold an exhibition in 2023, I’ll be pretty sad’, Maxym explained in a comment to DTF Magazine.

Shawarma cafe as an alternative to galleries

To organize the exhibition, Maxym contacted two galleries in Vinnytsia, but they were busy: they had already held or planned expositions for that time. ‘I thought okay, the hell with it, I’ll do an exhibition in a shawarma cafe. Moreover, it’s fun to have an exhibition in a shawarma cafe: art goes to the people’.

Kilderov rents a house in Vinnytsia, which he painted earlier this year with the owner’s permission. Not far away is a shawarma cafe, with the founders of which the artist quickly found a common language. A few months ago, he painted the ‘ASABa’, and then little by little he continued to paint the street.

About the concept of the exhibition

The exhibition will consist of two parts: about 15 works will be shown in the shawarma cafe ‘ASABa’. ‘Of course there are more works than the space allows, so the second part, where more works will be presented, will be held in my workshop, but only for my acquaintances and friends. Because without proper control people should not enter the territory where I live. But I didn’t manage to organize control promptly’.

This is a continuation of last year’s FRAMED//UNFRAMED exhibition, which was held in Kyiv. ‘After leaving the occupied territory and the opening of the exhibition in ‘Lavra’, I moved into studio art, worked a lot with the military theme, with volunteer activities (Maxym is the founder of Nova Kakhovka volunteer organization Humanity. — Note from DTF Magazine), created some paintings, some experiments’.

When: from December 24, 4:00 p.m.

Where: 35, Keletska Street, Vinnytsia, shawarma cafe ‘ASABa’

Maxym Kilderov has been making art since 2019. In 2021, he collaborated with GogolFest, painted seven train cars, the sculpture of Gogol’s head standing at the train station in Kyiv, as well as various locations of the festival in Dnipro and Kherson. He also paints clothes with calligraphy: such actions took place at the Kyiv Biennale, in Kherson — at his solo exhibition and at the ‘Mycelium’ art festival. In September 2023, Maxym painted one of the shelters in Kherson.
