Berlin prepares for demonstration in support of Ukraine

A demonstration ‘Ukraine is on fire, stop russian terror!’ by the Vitsche Berlin organization will be held near the Kanzleramt building in Berlin on 6 January. This will be a response to the massive shelling of Ukraine by russia, including the largest combined missile attack on January 2, 2024

It is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.

During the demonstration, people will demand faster delivery of weapons to Ukraine — air defense systems, drones and long-range missiles, isolation of russian diplomats — cutting off their access to international platforms and events, and approval to use frozen russian assets for assisting Ukraine.

How many Ukrainians live in Berlin

As of the end of December 2023, according to the German newspaper Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, 1.132 million refugees from Ukraine are registered in Germany. 62,556 of them — in Berlin.

In August 2023, Lilia Usik, a member of the Berlin Chamber of Deputies, said that 46,080 asylum seekers from Ukraine were registered in Berlin, of whom 44,410 had Ukrainian citizenship and 1,670 had third-country citizenship.

However, the exact number of Ukrainians living in Berlin, according to Usik, remains unknown, as there are other groups in addition to the above-mentioned: people with a different residence permit arrived under the visa-free regime, which allows a stay of 90 days, or asylum seekers who remain in the initial reception center and have not yet completed their documents.

Vitsche Berlin is an association of Ukrainians living in Berlin. Since March 2022, they regularly organize rallies of thousands of people in support of Ukraine, help Ukrainian refugees, collect humanitarian aid, and organize cultural and educational events dedicated to Ukraine.
