The world premiere of ‘Black Sunflowers’ by American director James Marcus Haney (‘No Cameras Allowed’) will take place as part of this year’s documentary program at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Actor Sean Penn serves as an executive producer on the project, while Ukrainian production company Limelite is also involved in its production. The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively revealed the first stills from the film

‘Black Sunflowers’ tells the story of Ukrainian youth ‘balancing between the front line and civilian life’.

The film follows the story of Ivan, a military driver who organizes street races when he is off duty; a young combat veteran with an amputation who ‘finds a sense of freedom at raves despite his running blade’; and Nikoletta, a young woman who swapped nature photography for war photography.

Black Sunflowers TIFF‘The film embodies a youthful spirit as it shifts between eclectic settings, from an underground dance club to a frontline barracks to a countryside swimming hole. We get to experience this generation in all its complexity as people grapple with tragedy, duty, disillusionment, and yearning for a better future’, the festival’s website says.

Recalling his first visit to Ukraine, director James Marcus Haney says he was surprised by how much ‘normal life carried on despite the war’.

About other Ukrainian films at TIFF

The festival’s short film program also includes the Ukrainian-Dutch film ‘Patronymic’. The autobiographical film by director Mariia Ponomariova explores the theme of cultural identity.

The Centerpiece section will also feature ‘The Betrayers’, directed by David Bezmozgis (‘Natasha’). Created as a co-production between Canada and Ukraine, the political thriller is based on Bezmozgis’s novel of the same name. ‘The Betrayers’ follows Baruch, a former Soviet dissident and Israeli politician who, after the collapse of his political career, flees to the already annexed Crimea, where he encounters a former friend who once denounced him to the KGB.
