Bunht has released an electro jazz album

Oneself Again album by Kyiv-based producer Yaroslav Tatarchenko, aka Bunht, was released on modern jazz label No Time For Swing. The LP is the artist’s debut in jazz instrumental music. Live presentation of the release will take place at Closer club on April 7

Oneself Again consists of 12 electro jazz compositions. Bunht wrote them during 2021-2023 and dedicated them to ‘his own intimate feelings about events in Ukraine, the world and his personal life’.

Yaroslav says that musically he wanted to ‘combine the worlds of complex ambient music and jazz’, and describes the singles as ‘minimalistic, but emotional guitar compositions complemented by atmospheric ambient textures, field recordings and glitch music’.

Here’s how Bunht describes some of the singles:

Through the Decades

‘This melody has really been with me for decades — I started composing it when I was 18 and finished it when I was 37. So it’s my connection between past and present’.

Solidify

‘In Solidify I tried to musically translate an important poem by poet Vasyl Stus, who fought for the independence of Ukraine all his life and was killed by the Soviet regime. At the end of the track you can hear Vasyl reciting this poem’.

Midnight

‘Midnight is the time when I write music. It’s a time that I feel very special, I feel the noise of life fading, and in the silence of the night I start to hear myself clearly’.

Dissonata

‘It’s a very special emotional song where I tried to combine beauty with pain. This melody is among the études, because it’s very usual for me to write something too complicated and then spend a lot of time practicing it’.

Decomposition

‘In the single, I used a complex chain of granular delay effects to create randomness in the structure and build a live interaction with that randomness’

Incredible faces of Azov

‘I created this track during the russian invasion and occupation of the city of Mariupol, when the last Ukrainian outpost was located on the territory of the Azovstal plant, where the Azov fighters held the defense. One of the photographers created a series of their portraits. And it was so painful to realize that all these really beautiful and strong people could be killed by the russians every second. All my emotions were embodied in this melody’.

Faldum

‘The most important writer for me in the last five years has been Hermann Hesse, so I write a lot of music influenced by his stories. This composition is dedicated to his fictional city of Faldum, where the dreams of all the inhabitants suddenly began to come true, but not everyone could bear the responsibility for their wishes’.
