‘Shcho i svyatoye…’: Check out the collaborative folklore album by ShchukaRyba, Bunht and Yevhen Puhachov

The collaborative album ‘Shcho i svyatoye…’ by Kyiv-based folk band ShchukaRyba, electronic musician Bunht and guitarist Yevhen Puhachov has been released on streaming services. It consists of five compositions that combine traditional Ukrainian music with electronic music

‘Shcho i svyatoye’ was released via the contemporary jazz label No Time For Swing.

In a commentary for DTF Magazine, the label’s co-founder, drummer Misha Birchenko, said that the idea of a joint release arose after last year’s show ‘Kudriavka’s Carols’ — for it, Ukrainian artists sang eight traditional Ukrainian carols with electronic accompaniment by Buhnt, and members of the ShchukaRyba band were among the participants. In 2023 he and Buhnt started working on a separate release and then the electronic music producer offered Birchenko to release it via No Time For Swing.

‘Nowadays the theme of Ukrainian folklore resonates with everyone. At No Time For Swing we identify ourselves as a mouthpiece of quality contemporary local music, including folklore. Our team follows the work of Yaryna Sizyk (singer of ShchukaRyba. — Note from DTF Magazine) and the band, and above all we appreciate their expertise and musicality’, Misha explains and adds that the label is ‘happy to collaborate with artists who can be called the most authoritative representatives of folklore music in Ukraine’.

According to Buhnt, the sound of ‘Shcho i svyatoye…’ was formed in the process of working on the compositions. During the writing of the second track the team was joined by guitarist and member of Hyphen Dash Yevhen Puhachov, who ‘brought a lot of things that formed the direction of the album’, and after the beginning of work on the third song Buhnt ‘realized that the release will be created under the influence of modern fusion’.

‘Our main task was not to create a speculative release in ‘sharovarshchyna’ style, but to present the depth of our still unexplored folklore nature, — Misha and Buhnt add. — Combining this creativity with electronic music, we had to make it sound — so that it would still be folklore and not turn into a mix of electronic music saturated with our own egos. It’s important to collaborate, let’s say, on equal footing, to hear each other’.

You can listen to ‘Shcho i svyatoye…’ on Bandcamp, all proceeds from the release will be donated to the Shields Ukraine charity organization, as well as on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music.

Simultaneously with the release of ‘Shcho i svyatoye…’ on streaming services No Time For Swing announced the concert of the ShchukaRyba band. It will take place in Kyiv’s Atlas club on January 13.

At the concert, the performers together with Buhnt, Yevhen Puhachov and Misha Birchenko will present a new album. The youth folk band from Kyiv ShchukaRyba was formed at the Ivan Honchar Museum in 2018. In August 2022, the band performed on the second joint broadcast by DTF Magazine and online radio Gasoline, dedicated to the 31st anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence.
