Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Ayo Edebiri stopped by the NYT Cooking show to prepare a family recipe. The actor from ‘The Bear’ chose a vegetarian borscht based on a recipe from his mother-in-law — Ebon is married to Ukrainian artist and photographer Yelena Yemchuk
According to Moss-Bachrach, borscht is one of his favorite dishes. The actor also brought his daughters to the shoot to tell them about the origins of borscht.
‘It’s a dish that is really part of the fabric of Ukrainian culture. Every family makes it, and there’s many, many different iterations of it. Some have meat, some have beans, some have tomatoes. It’s a real staple of Eastern Europe and a real workhorse. Almost like the equivalent of an Italian marinara, where it becomes reflective of the different families in the different regions’, he tells Ayo.
The actor adds that his daughters were raised on this. Lidia Yemchuk made it every time the family visited her in Los Angeles.
What ‘The Bear’ taught the actors
According to Edebiri, the best thing she learned from her time on ‘The Bear’ was an omelet recipe she created with culinary producer Courtney Storer.
Moss-Bachrach also recalled a piece of advice Matty Matheson gave him on set: don’t stir the ingredients too often. ‘You don’t need to be constantly moving things around. Let them interact with the heat and let some time go by, move it around so their ‘friends’ can interact with the heat’.

All eight episodes of ‘The Bear’s’ fifth and final season were released on June 25. The events unfold after Carmen leaves the restaurant and Sydney becomes the chef.
