The windows, frames and glass plafonds in the museum building were damaged most of all. Volunteers have already patched the windows up and removed shards of glass. Work to assess the damage continues.

The museum team secured the collection at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. But as museum communicator Olha Nosko pointed out in a commentary to DTF Magazine, the Khanenko memorial house is a monument of architecture.

Inside, the building is decorated with paintings by Hans Makart and Wilhelm Kotarbiński, and there is also a 100-year-old oak staircase and wooden trim.

The paintings and interior were not damaged by the debris, but it is important to conserve the building before the rainy and cold season begins. The Khanenko Museum team is now consulting with experts and waiting for final estimates on future restoration.

The windows of the first to the third floor, from the side of the inner yard of the exhibition halls of the geological, paleontological and zoological departments were broken as a result of the bombardment. The museum collections were not damaged because they were not removed during the war because the size of the exhibits was too big.

Now the institution needs materials or funds to purchase materials for the prompt repair of 57 broken windows.

«The windows need to be installed as soon as possible before the rains come, because we have a specific collection and the art forms need to be protected. Even the stones have to be protected — we can’t leave them in such an open room. Especially we can’t leave here natural objects like bones, stuffed animals — it would be just horrible if they were damaged by fungus. We will lose this collection, and it’s impossible to restore it. All that is in the museum was collected by our predecessors for many years from all over the world», director on museum and scientific work Oksana Chervonenko said in a comment to «Suspilne».

The shock wave damaged the windows on the first and second floor of the building from the side of Tereshchenkivska Street and Shevchenko Boulevard. Rocket debris flew into the museum courtyard and fell on the glass dome of the atrium (the inner covered courtyard of the building).

The roof of the main building had not been surveyed at the time of writing, so it is not yet known what condition it is in.

The interior of the museum and the infrastructural parts of the building survived. The through damage to two rows of windows was only in one place. According to Dmytro Stus, director general of the National museum of Taras Shevchenko, almost all metal-plastic interior windows and structures survived the shock wave. Five or seven of them are deformed and need to be replaced.

The exhibits of the museum were not damaged as a result of the shelling.

Stus notes that at the moment, the main task of the museum team is to ensure the preservation of heat and maintenance of the temperature and humidity regime. Because of this, and because of possible future bombardments, the museum workers decided not to glaze the windows for the time being, but to cover them to protect against possible damage to the glass. This work has already begun, in particular, the museum received 26 sheets of plywood from the Center for the Salvation of Cultural Heritage.

The museum will try to cover its urgent needs by its own efforts, and its team plans to bring the museum «into a state of proper status» after the end of the war.
